Young criminal jailed for string of offences
A 21-year-old repeat offender was jailed for 18 months yesterday for a string of offences including trespassing and assault.Magistrates’ Court heard that on May 15, Troy Harris Jr entered a home on Harrington Sound Road as a trespasser, damaging a bedroom window in the process. When confronted by Wayne Augustus, who lived in the home, Harris had said he was looking for the complainant’s daughter. He left after being told that she did not live at the home.On May 16, a day after the first incident, the Sandys resident assaulted Markel Smith in the Government Administration Building, punching her in the face in an argument over a disconnected cell phone.A day later, on May 17, the court heard that Harris was involved in a traffic collision after he attempted to overtake a car on Somerset Road. The car was in the process of pulling into MarketPlace, and Harris collided with the car’s door.Officers investigating the collision discovered that the motorcycle ridden by Harris had been reported stolen from Radnor Road the previous day. Harris fled the scene on foot before he could be arrested. The Bermuda Police Service arrested Harris on May 27, but he managed to briefly escape custody outside the Hamilton Police Station, pushing open the door of a police car and running down Court Street. He was found by officers a short time later crouching in bushes near Place’s Place, still handcuffed.Harris first appeared in Magistrates’ Court in May, pleading guilty to charges of entering as a trespasser, wilful damage, assault causing bodily harm, and escaping custody. However, at that time he denied taking a vehicle without consent.Appearing in court yesterday for sentencing, Harris pleaded guilty to the offence, although he maintained that he did not personally steal the motorcycle.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan noted that Harris already has a series of previous convictions, and was in fact on probation for three other matters at the time of the offences.Calling for a two-year period of incarceration, Ms Mulligan said: “The court really doesn’t have many options. Mr Harris really isn’t giving us a lot of options.”Harris meanwhile told the court: “I don’t really have nothing to say. I just want to apologise for the situation I did get myself into.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Harris to a total of 18 months in jail for the various offences, without the time already spent in custody taken into account, to be followed by two years of probation.“I hope you get yourself in order, as they say,” Mr Warner said.
