Westgate prisoner denies attack on inmate

A range of allegations from prison assault to murder came before Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons during the monthly Supreme Court arraignments session.Antoine Anderson, a Westgate prisoner, denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent to do so to Winston Darrell, a fellow inmate. The attack is alleged to have happened on August 22, 2011. Anderson, 34, will go on trial on November 5.Lang Onley, 52, of Hamilton Parish, is accused of wounding a man and a woman at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club on September 18, 2011. He pleaded not guilty to injuring the alleged victims, Wali Salaam, 29, and Sherri-Ann Tucker, 46. He was remanded into custody until the next arraignments session on September 4 when a date for his trial will be fixed.Josef Smith, 24, of Warwick, pleaded not guilty to an alleged armed home invasion. He is accused of committing an aggravated burglary at a residence in Long Ridge Pass, Devonshire on January 3. He is said to have had the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and been armed with an imitation firearm. Mr Smith was remanded into custody until his trial on November 19.Cervio Cox, 29, of Warwick, denied two attempted murder charges in relation to a shooting on Reid Street on March 24. He is accused of attempting to kill Lavon Thomas and Darren Thompson, and using a firearm to commit those offences.Another defendant, Devon Hewey, 23, of Pembroke, is also facing the same charges and has pleaded not guilty. Both men must come back to court on August 17 for a further hearing in the case.A number of defendants appeared in last week’s arraignments session via videolink from Westgate Correctional Centre in a new move for the Supreme Court.They included David DeSilva, 47, of Pembroke. He is accused of murdering Denise Evans-Wilkinson, whose body was found in the sea off Mill Point Road in Pembroke on April 29, 2011. His trial date was confirmed for November 6.Also appearing via videolink was Norris Simpson, 54, of Pembroke. He is accused of murdering 66-year-old social worker Ida James at her Paget home on or about September 1, 2011. His trial date is currently set for August 13, with Simpson due back in court for a pre-trial hearing on Monday, August 6.Roger Lightbourne Jr, who has pleaded not guilty to the premeditated murder of Jamiko Leshore on March 1, 2011, also appeared via videolink. The judge heard that his trial may be held on January 14, subject to the schedule of defence lawyer Craig Attridge, who is currently off-Island.Mr Lightbourne Jr, of St David’s, was remanded into custody until the next arraignments session.Meanwhile self-employed painter Carlos Astwood, accused of attempted arson at the Buzz Cafe on Pitts Bay Road, will be tried again on November 19.His previous trial ended in a hung jury last month.Meanwhile, there was a scuffle outside the courtroom shortly before the arraignments session began. A woman, who police declined to identify, was arrested after being denied entry to the courtroom due to being improperly dressed. She was detained by police after swearing at security staff, and taken to Hamilton Police Station.A police spokesman said on Wednesday afternoon that it was anticipated she would be bailed, pending a court date.
