Soldier imprisoned for failing to attend drills
A St George’s man was sentenced to a month in jail after failing to meet his regimental duties.Richard Trott, 22, of Southside Road, claimed that his asthma prevented him from performing as a soldier.Prosecutor Tawana Tannock told Magistrates’ Court that Trott failed to attend regiment on eight occasions between June 2010 and October 2010. Trott pleaded guilty to the offence. When Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked the defendant whether he intended to go back and complete the two years and one month of service he had left in the regiment, Trott did not reply and remained silent.Defence lawyer Susan Moore-Williams then said Trott was unable to perform his regimental duties due to “asthmatic problems” and requested a physical to prove that he is unfit.Regiment Press Officer Ben Beasley, who was present at the court proceedings, told the court that there had been no record of any such problems listed for the defendant, and that if need be, medical attention and physicals were available to those enlisted.Mr Warner denied Trott’s request for a physical and sentenced him to 30 days imprisonment.Capt Beasley said after the hearing: “[Trott] was actually charged with missing 30 training periods between February 4 2010 and October 24 2010, however, some were discarded.“In addition, we have no record of him attending training since October 24 2010.”“In court I informed the Magistrate that there are two Regiment doctors who are both Majors in the Regiment and they will not charge a soldier for an examination or treatment if relating to regimental duties,” he later told The Royal Gazette.“The doctors are specialists and are able to recommend that a soldier either be unfit for duties, put on light duties, or are not to engage in specific duties that may aggravate a particular injury/condition.“Soldiers are also medically examined prior to commencing service.”
