Magistrate orders feuding sisters to find separate housing

A domestic dispute over feeding household pets landed a woman in Magistrates’ Court for the second time this summer.Tara Burrows, 41, pleaded guilty to uttering threatening words to her niece, assaulting a police officer and violently resisting arrest. The defendant has a similar conviction for assaulting Kimberley Burrows, her sister, after the two women had a violent altercation over cookies in late June. She was given a conditional discharge with orders to keep the peace and continue counselling.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that a dispute with Tara’s 15-year-old niece, Kimberley’s daughter, over feeding two cats sparked this outburst.Tara reportedly began shouting at her niece, saying “your momma needs to leave my daughter alone”, and “I should poison you and your momma”.Tara’s niece retreated to her mother’s room until Kimberly arrived at the Benny’s Bay Road, Sandys, house where the sisters and their respective children live. Kimberley then called the police. When the police arrived and informed Tara that she was being arrested for threatening words, the defendant became aggravated, saying: “Leave me alone, I have done nothing wrong.”She punched one of the officers in the face and injured another’s right little finger. The officers then managed to place her under arrest. The court heard that the reason for Tara’s resistance was that she was not allowed to take her children to the neighbours before being taken to the police station.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said he found it “ridiculous” that this domestic dispute should come before the court. He expressed dismay that “police officers invariably get the bad end of the stick when they get involved in these things”.Mr Warner gave Tara a conditional discharge with bail set at $1,000.He ordered a social inquiry report and required that she comply with temporary housing separate from her sister, arranged for her and her children by the Department of Child and Family Services.
