45 grams of cannabis earns man 90 days in prison
A 35-year-old man received a three-month prison sentence after he was caught with 45 grams of cannabis.Tahrik Smith, of Parson’s Road, Devonshire, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to possession of cannabis with intent to distribute.Crown consul Garrett Byrne said the drugs had a street value of $2,275.Police stopped Smith while he was driving in Devonshire at 2am on March 10 and searched his car and his person. They found six individually wrapped packets of marijuana in his pockets, totaling 45.26 grams.Smith, who is a part-time truck driver, said: “I’m sorry, it will never happen again.”He stated that the cannabis was for personal use, despite his guilty plea.Duty counsel Ken Savoury asked Senior Magistrate Archie Warner to consider Smith’s early guilty plea and clean record. He requested a social inquiry report and suggested a suspended sentence was appropriate.But Mr Warner said after considering the circumstances of the case, he found a prison term to be appropriate. He then sentenced Smith to 90 days’ imprisonment.
