Driver who flipped car was three times over alcohol limit

A man whose car flipped over while rushing to his girlfriend at the hospital was banned from the road for drinking and driving.Dwon Trott, 35, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to charges of driving with an excess of alcohol, and driving a car that was both unlicensed and uninsured.The court heard that at around 3.15am on September 3, police were on mobile patrol on Middle Road when they received a report of an overturned vehicle on Jennings Road.On the scene, the officers discovered the overturned car on top of a stone wall and a hedge. The driver of the vehicle was not present, but a witness said they saw a man walking away from the car.The witness gave the officers a description of the suspect, and officers realised that they had seen someone matching the description walking near the junction with Verdmont Road.The officers went back to Verdmont Road, where they found Trott, who admitted driving the overturned car.Asked if he had been drinking, he responded: “Yes. I’m a bartender at Crawl Club and I had a few.”He was subsequently arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he provided police with breath samples, the lower of which showed 284mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, more than triple the legal limit of 80mg.Questioned, about the incident, the Hamilton Parish man told officers that he was on the way to the hospital to check on his girlfriend, who had reportedly collapsed.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner disqualified Trott from driving all vehicles for a period of one year, and fined him $800 for drinking with an excess of alcohol.Mr Warner further fined Trott $500 for not having third party insurance for the vehicle and $500 for the vehicle not being licenced.
