Probation for US man who helped smuggle drugs to Bermuda
A man who admitted being involved in a drug smuggling ring was yesterday sentenced to probation in Pennsylvania after months of aiding authorities.Brian Wade, of Middletown, Delaware, told Bermuda’s Supreme Court last month that he had been stashing packages in Bermuda-bound aircraft for at least a decade.Wade had pleaded guilty to possessing 2.57kg of “a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of marijuana” with intent to distribute in an incident on or about October 2, 2010.He also pleaded guilty to a second, similar charge involving 452g of a mixture and substance containing marijuana on October 7, 2010.On that day, Wade was reportedly seen placing a package, found to contain cannabis, in US Airways flight 1070 to Bermuda. The incident sparked a security concern at the Pennsylvania airport. All 102 passengers were ordered to evacuate the plane while federal officers and bomb-sniffing dogs searching the aircraft and baggage.Wade told the Supreme Court in Bermuda that he had worked at the Philadelphia International Airport between 1988 and 2010 as a “ramp agent.” During that time, he said he had hidden numerous packages on aircraft travelling to Bermuda. For his role, he said he was paid $400 to $500 per pound of cannabis, but he said he could not be sure if some of the packages contained drugs other than cannabis because he did not open them. After his arrest, Wade agreed to work with US National Security, recording numerous phone conversations with contacts in Bermuda, including Lottimore who he called “Afro.”Wade also worked with US Homeland Security to set up a meeting between a friend of Lottimore and an undercover officer under the guise of handing over the drugs to be smuggled.Hatherley was caught on surveillance camera meeting with the undercover officer in New York, and handing him a package containing nearly 400g of heroin. Both Hatherley and Lottimore were last month convicted of conspiring to import heroin in connection to the incident. A third man targeted in the investigation, David Carroll, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to import drugs. All three are currently awaiting sentencing.Yesterday morning, Wade appeared in the Eastern District Court of Pennsylvania to be sentenced for the cannabis offences against him.He was sentenced to a period of three years probation, along with a $1,000 fine and a $200 special assessment, a fine added as part of any sentence related to a federal crime.
