Men jailed for gas station mob attack
Six men who violently attacked a couple at a Hamilton gas station after a night out drinking, were yesterday jailed.Rahki Paul, 19, Brian Batson, 20, Jahfari Raynor, 19, Sadune Raynor, 18, Umdae Woolridge, 23 and Akiri Trott, 20, apologised for the offence.“This wasn’t a fight, it was an outright assault and on top of that one of the victims was a female,” magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told them.“Yet you come to court and say you’re sorry. Sorry doesn’t fix it.”Shannon Ingham and Tulio Escolastica were set upon and beaten by the men at Esso Tiger Mart around 2.20am on August 12, 2011.The men then attempted to drag the pair out of the Richmond Road gas station, while threatening to kill them. The incident occurred after a night of drinking to celebrate Paul’s birthday.Food items valued at around $320 and some of the store’s shelves were damaged in the fight. The 24-hour station was closed following the incident until 6am.Mr Tokunbo told the group their guilty pleas had come too late.“The first guilty plea came from Woolridge in May, 2012; the rest of you didn’t admit what you did until August,” he said.“These are very serious offences of grievous bodily harm involving violence by a group of you, a mob of you. You destroyed property and caused a business to close. One of the victims suffered a broken nose, a black eye and bruised ribs.”He then turned to Paul and said: “And you say it won’t happen again. What a way to spend your birthday. You were the leader. You started it all and everybody else chipped in.“This kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated and must be reflected in the sentence.”Mr Tokunbo sentenced Paul to nine months for assaulting Mr Escolastica, six months for assaulting Ms Ingham and 30 days for damaging Esso Tiger Mart property.Batson and Woolridge were sentenced to six months while both Raynors and Trott received four months each.He also ordered the men be placed on a year’s probation after their release, during which time they must submit to random drug testing and abstain from alcohol and drug use.
