Man admits burgling church, army base
A 40-year-old Southampton man yesterday admitted three burglary offences, one at a church.Maxwell Mustapha Smith broke into the Sergeants’ Mess at Bermuda Regiment Headquarters at Wawick Camp twice in August.He also admitted a 2008 break-in at Christ Church in Warwick.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan Smith told Magistrates’ Court that six cases of assorted sodas worth $120 was stolen from the church.Six bottles of Corona beer worth $18 were stolen from the Sergeants’ Mess on August 9; beer worth $36 was stolen three days later.On both occasions the culprit gained access through windows.Mrs Mulligan Smith said the defendants’ fingerprints were found on various windows at both locations.Smith, who is currently serving 50 days in prison for non-payment of a $500 fine for a prowling offence, apologised to the court.“Somebody burned my house down and I just gave up,” he said. He was represented in court by lawyer Larry Scott.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered social inquiry and drug assessment reports and adjourned the case until December 19 for mention.
