Man banned after ignoring police advice not to drive after drinking

A 62-year-old who ignored the advice of officers not to drive was yesterday banned from driving all vehicles.Jerry Looby, from Devonshire, was arrested on Cedar Park Road at 11.20am on November 10. The court heard that officers were on duty in the area when they saw Looby leaving a house and get into the driver’s seat of a car.As Looby began to start the car, the officers spoke to him and asked if he had been drinking. When he said yes, the officers told him not to drive and went to find him a ride home.However Looby continued to start the car and put the vehicle into drive before police stopped him again.He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he submitted to a breath test. The test revealed Looby had 239mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, nearly triple the legal limit of 80mg.Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, Looby denied being impaired, but pleaded guilty to having care and control of a vehicle while over the legal blood/alcohol limit.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Looby $800 and banned him from driving all vehicles for one year.
