Drunk driver admits intruding on crime scene
A Pembroke man who drove onto a crime scene after drinking was yesterday fined for the incident.Michael Raynor, 31, rode his motorcycle past several uniformed officers who shouted at him to stop before he was arrested. On Saturday evening, following a shooting at the junction of North Shore Road and Band Room Lane in Pembroke, police cordoned off North Shore Road, between The Glebe Road and Blackwatch Pass.Police were investigating the shooting when Raynor was seen driving west on North Shore Road towards the scene of the crime. Despite several officers attempting to stop him, Raynor continued onto Band Room Lane before police physically stopped him.Raynor smelled of alcohol and, when asked, admitted he had been drinking saying: “My auntie died and I needed a couple of drinks.”He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and taken to Hamilton Police Station for processing.Appearing in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Raynor pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, saying: “Sorry about that there.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Raynor $800 and banned him from driving all vehicles for a year. While Raynor requested time to pay the fine, Mr Warner noted that the defendant had denied drinking and driving in a 2005 incident but never appeared at his trial date.“I’m going to dismiss that matter because of age, but I’m not going to give you time to pay the other one because clearly you don’t come back,” Mr Warner said.
