Robinson got 'scared' a year before his murder, girlfriend claims

Jay Dill (left) and Devon Hewey are now on trial, accused of the premeditated murder of Randy Robinson.

The girlfriend of murdered footballer Randy Robinson said he stopped going out after he was involved in a fight at a football game.Dwanae Simons told Supreme Court she had been dating Mr Robinson for three years before the 22-year-old was fatally shot on March 31, 2011.She recalled an incident in 2010 when she met him after a football game.“He had a black eye. His clothes were ripped and he had a bust lip. He was sort of shocked by the whole situation,” she said.Ms Simons said her boyfriend used to frequently hang out at Devonshire Recreational Club and Captain’s Lounge, but seemed to stop going out after that incident.“I think he was scared,” she said.Prosecutors allege that Mr Robinson was shot by 23-year-old Jay Dill, who was riding pillion with 24-year-old Devon Hewey. Both deny premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit the indictable offence.Under cross-examination, Ms Simons said Mr Robinson never told her he’d received any threats but that she didn’t think he would have told her if he had.“I don’t think he would have wanted me to worry,” she said.Mr Dill’s mother, Sandra Dill, was Mr Robinson’s supervisor while he worked at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. She was working at the hospital on the evening of the shooting and called her son from the lobby at around 9.40pm.She told he told her he was with Mr Hewey and they planned to go to “the Boat Club” on North Shore. The trial continues.
