Warwick man fined for assaulting police officer
A Warwick man admitted assaulting a police officer trying to pull him this week, telling the court he was trying to pick up his son.Avonn Browne, 40, pleaded guilty to assault, failing to stop for police, driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving without due care in connection with an incident on Tuesday.Prosecutor Nicole Smith told Magistrates’ Court that police were on South Road in Paget at around 6pm when they saw a motorcycle weaving between vehicles and impeding traffic. An officer stepped into the road to stop the rider, but the motorcycle attempted to drive around her. She put out her hand in a stop motion but the rider stuck his own arm out, pushing back her fingers, and continued to ride away.A search of the records associated with the motorcycle revealed it was neither licensed, nor insured.Browne turned himself in on Wednesday and, when asked about the incident, told police: “Yes, I pushed her away. She was trying to grab me and pull me off my bike. I was going to pick up my son.”After pleading guilty to the charge in Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Browne admitted he had no intention of stopping for police because he knew his bike was not licensed and he was already late picking up his son from school.“I told the officers the reason I didn’t stop is I didn’t know what was going to happen when I stopped. That is why I turned myself in the next day to deal with the circumstances,” he said. After being warned by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that assaulting police carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison, Browne asked for leniency saying he is a single father with custody of his son.“I’m not really a troublemaker,” Browne said. “I go to work and I take care of my son. That’s all I do.”Mr Warner fined Browne $800 for assaulting an officer, $500 for failing to stop, $250 for riding an unlicensed vehicle and $250 for driving without due care and attention.
