Jail for man caught driving while disqualified

A Pembroke man has been jailed after driving for a third time while disqualified.Seion Darrell, 27, of Twin Lane, was also banned from the roads for three years, and fined $2,000 for impaired driving.Magistrates’ Court heard that police at Hamilton’s 24-hour gas station spotted Darrell pulling in at 3.37am on March 24.Officers had spoken earlier that night with an apparently intoxicated Darrell outside the Beach bar, Crown counsel Geoffrey Faiella said.Darrell appeared unsteady when exiting the car at the station, and was “incoherent” when police spoke with him.Informed that he was being arrested, Darrell told them: “You’re not Bermudian; you can’t talk to me. I can say what the f**k I want.”At the time, he was disqualified from driving until September 20.According to Mr Faiella, Darrell had been first convicted for impaired driving in August, 2011, and was subsequently caught driving while disqualified in August, 2012 — plus a second time that September. Also outstanding from August were fines of $235 for speeding, and $500 for driving while disqualified.Asked by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner why he’d again chosen to drive while banned from the roads, Darrell said: “The reason I was driving this time was the people I was with weren’t able to drive — it was safer for me to drive a couple people.”Mr Warner told him: “You were not able to drive either.”On top of the prison sentence, Darrell was fined a further $500 for driving while disqualified. He was given 30 days to pay the total $2,500, or have an extra 30 days’ imprisonment.Darrell was further ordered to pay the outstanding $735 immediately, or serve an additional 30 days.
