Biker who attempted to escape from police gets hefty fine
A Warwick man who tried to escape police was fined $1,300 for multiple traffic offences.Devon Hairston, 23, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop at a stop sign.Magistrates’ Court heard that at around 1.30am on March 19, police were driving along Middle Road in an unmarked vehicle when they saw two motorcycles come onto the road from Khyber Pass without stopping.Officers caused the two motorcycles to pull into a bus lay by, but when the officers stepped out of the car the riders pulled away.One vehicle rode east while the second, operated by Hairston, went west. Police pursued the defendant as Hairston circled a nearby business before returning to Middle Road, causing a passing vehicle to swerve to avoid a collision.The chase continued onto the St Mary’s Church grounds where Hairston lost control of his vehicle on the grass. Hairston ran to a nearby vehicle yard, where he was arrested by police.He told the officers: “We guys got chased by a car earlier and we thought you were them.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Hairston $500 for driving while disqualified, $400 for driving dangerously, $300 for failing to stop for police and $100 for failing to stop at a stop sign.He further issued Hairston a total of 22 traffic points for the offences.
