Man jailed for slapping woman
A 33-year-old Warwick man was jailed for ten days after he admitted slapping a woman in front of children.Warwick resident Kyjan Saltus pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to assaulting Erica DeMello on March 3 in Devonshire.Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that the defendant and complainant were at a youth tournament at the Devonshire Recreation Club with their children.The incident occurred between 12:30pm and 1pm when Ms DeMello received a phone call on her cell phone.Ms Clarke said the defendant became jealous and slapped the victim open handed three times. But he denied that in court and said he only slapped her once.He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he knew what he did was wrong but that he was going through a stressful period in his life.Mr Warner said he did not accept the defendant’s claim. “You can’t go around slapping up women like this, tell me why I shouldn’t send you to prison. People who behave this way have got some real problems,” he said.He asked the defendant where did he think he came from? Saltus replied: “My mother.” Mr Warner said: “Exactly.”The father of four daughters pleaded for a non-custodial sentence and said he has custody of his 12-year-old daugther who needs him.Mr Warner sentenced him to ten days in prison.
