Teenagers accused of Warwick crime spree

Two teenagers were remanded on charges they committed a crime spree in Warwick.Both were arrested Tuesday following a police search in the Astwood Park area.Shanrico Ottley and Shayne James, both 19, denied breaking into a Warwick home and stealing $2,135 of goods on June 4. They also both denied attempting to break into two other Warwick residences on the same day.Mr Ottley, from Tamarind Close, Warwick, was separately charged with entering a fourth home in Warwick as a trespasser on the same day, and burglarising a First Avenue, Devonshire home in a separate incident in January.The two men were spotted by an off-duty detective as they attempted to break into an apartment on Tribe Road #5 around 11.30am, Magistrates’ Court heard. The pair ran when confronted, and the police were contacted.A short while later, officers in a police car saw two men matching the description of the suspects in the Rockview Lane area. One of the suspects was standing on an air conditioning unit and appeared to be trying to gain access to an upper level apartment.When the suspects saw the police vehicle, they ran into trees near Astwood Park. Police cordoned off the area and launched a search for the suspects.Mr James, who resides in Pembroke, was spotted by officers emerging from a wooded area near the park. When he saw the officers he allegedly ran across South Road and attempted to climb a tree, but was stopped.Police continued to search for the second suspect. They spoke with a Longtail Drive resident who realised that he had left his front door unlocked. He returned home to find Mr Ottley hiding in his bathroom.Mr Ottley was found in possession of an iPod Touch, which was later revealed to have been stolen from a Rockview Lane property — the lower apartment in the same building the suspects were seen trying to break into.A search of Mr Ottley’s home revealed an iPhone, which was reported stolen in a burglary in January.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded both teens into custody until September when the matter will go to trial.
