Drug mules jailed for six years
Two Americans began serving a six-year prison term after they admitted importing cocaine with an estimated street value of nearly $125,000 with intent to supply.Tasha Plumber, 34, and Collin Moodie, 40, were arrested at LF Wade International Airport on May 30 shortly after their arrival on a commercial airline flight from New York.Moodie agreed to a search at the airport, during which a package taped to his groin area fell out of his underwear.It was analysed and found to be 241.1 grammes of cocaine with a street value of $60,275.Plumber, who declined a search at the airport, was searched at King Edward VII Memorial, where she removed a package concealed inside her body after latex tape was excreted when she urinated in a bed pan.The package she handed over to police contained 249.6 grammes of cocaine worth $64,350 if sold on the streets.Both defendants worked for Delta Air Lines at one point. The court heard that Plumber lost her job seven months ago.The mother of three young children shed tears as she apologised to the court yesterday and said she also lost her home and everything that she owned.The court heard that she was told she could make a lot of money from drugs in Bermuda, and that she was promised payment once the drugs were imported.Moodie told police he was bringing the drugs in for someone by the name of Tony. He was still employed by the airline at the time of his arrest.The court heard that he is the father of eight children and financially responsible for the children left behind by his brother who died a year ago. He cried as he apologised to the court and for bringing shame on his family at home.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner noted that the maximum penalty was ten years’ imprisonment.After hearing mitigating factors from lawyer Saul Dismont, Mr Warner sentenced the pair to six years in prison.
