Bermudian who stabbed girlfriend in neck is jailed in UK
A Bermudian man has been jailed for six years in the UK after stabbing his girlfriend twice in the neck.John Richardson, 56, pleaded guilty to stabbing his partner during a row which erupted while the couple ate dinner.Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard how Richardson had accused his partner of 12 years of having an affair while he had been on a visit to Bermuda. She denied the accusation, and countered that he was the one who had been unfaithful. The row continued over a supper of pizza that Richardson had ordered in.According to prosecutor David Jackson, Richardson fetched a knife to cut the pizza as the couple continued their row, before “relatively out of the blue, having asked him to leave, the complainant was aware of feeling a sharp blow to her neck”.“She did not realise he had a knife at the time,” Mr Jackson said.“She felt a blow, she felt a second blow. She felt blood on her neck and realised she had been injured. She was not aware the blade had broken off and was still embedded in the side of her neck.”The court heard the victim’s 18-year-old daughter ran in the room and pulled Richardson away. She alerted neighbours and one, a nurse, ran to the house and tended to the victim until paramedics arrived. The victim was taken to hospital and has been left with two scars on her neck and limited use of her right arm.Richardson, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm on May 10. The plea was entered on a basis that it was not until the time he stabbed her that he formed the intention of using the knife.Defence lawyer Stephen Oldham said the offence was not premeditated. He added that Richardson, a prison officer who has no previous convictions, was genuinely remorseful.
