Careless driver injured teen
A motorist who injured a teenager, delaying his return to school overseas, has appeared in Magistrates’ Court for causing grievous bodily harm by careless driving.Alicia Maynard, 57, of Angle Street, Pembroke, admitted disobeying a traffic sign outside Saltus Grammar School and striking 16-year-old Andre Durham shortly before 5pm on August 24.Prosecutor Susan Mulligan said Maynard was driving east on St John’s Road when she turned into the school entrance, crossing Mr Durham’s path as he drove west on his motorcycle.The impact launched the rider into Maynard’s windscreen. He suffered a broken bone in his knee, fractured ribs and an injured finger.The teen, who required surgery, was unable to work over the summer and had to delay his return to school in the US.It was a first offence for Maynard, who is unemployed due to a disability.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo requested a social inquiry report and ordered Maynard to return to court for sentencing on December 13.
