Quartet deny sex assault on young teen
Four young men yesterday denied sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in an incident last summer.
The defendants — three 19-year-old men from Sandys, Warwick and Southampton, and a 22-year-old from Hamilton Parish — denied a charge of serious sexual assault relating to an incident on July 27.
The Sandys man further denied a charge of causing the victim to take a drug or other substance with the intent of “stupefying” her or enabling him to overpower her.
Neither the defendants nor the victim can be identified for legal reasons.
All four men were further remanded in custody. Acting Chief Justice Charles-Etta Simmons ordered an April trial date.
A social inquiry report by Probation Officers was ordered for the sentencing of Andre Nesbitt, who pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening to kill a woman via a Facebook message on November 20.
Charges against three people accused of money laundering were dropped by prosecutors.
Kiare Hollis, 33, Celia Correia, 29, and Shuntai Scraders, 27, had been charged last year with a series of money laundering offences, but the Supreme Court heard yesterday that the Director of Public Prosecution had decided against bringing the matter to trial.
Mrs Justice Simmons noted that the decision was made on December 24, calling it an “early Christmas present” for the trio, but warned that the Crown could potentially bring the matter back before the courts in the future.
The Acting Chief Justice also set new sentencing dates for four convicted killers who must be resentenced due to a ruling last year by London’s Privy Council.
Antonio Myers, David Cox, Kevin Warner and Derek Spalding had been given minimum sentences of 38, 38, 35 and 38 years respectively, but the recent ruling in the cases of Ze Selassie and Jermaine Pearman clarified that the minimum sentence for premeditated murder should not exceed 25 years.
In cases of “simple” murder, such as that of Myers, the Privy Council ruled the minimum sentence should not exceed 15 years.
All four men appeared before the court via teleconference, with Cox and Myers both receiving sentencing dates on January 13.
Warner and Spalding, meanwhile, are scheduled to be resentenced the following day.
