A Devonshire man has admitted the fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Steven Jireh Iris last year.

Tyrone Pedro, 23, denied a charge of murdering Mr Iris, but during an appearance in Supreme Court yesterday morning he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said the plea was acceptable to the Crown, and asked for a conviction of manslaughter be recorded against Pedro.

Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves ordered a social inquiry report on Pedro, and that he remain remanded in custody. The matter is expected to return to court in May for a sentencing date to be set.

Iris died after suffering “serious stab wounds” to the abdomen in an attack outside of a home on The Glebe Road in Devonshire on the morning of August 23.

According to police he was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle, but succumbed to his injuries at around 4.40pm that day.

Iris’ death came less than a week after he was released from prison. He had been sentenced to five years in prison in 2009 for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection to a 2008 fight.
