Conditional discharges for women after Front Street fight
A mother and a student started brawling outside a Front Street bar after one threw a helmet at the other.
Jazmin Simmons, 24, and Shauntia Brimmer, 18, were arrested outside the Bistro At The Beach after the fight broke out at 3.30am on Saturday.
Both admitted to affray in Magistrates’ Court this morning.
Prosecutor Larissa Burgess said police saw the women throwing kicks and punches at each other, so arrested and cautioned them and took them to Hamilton Police Station.
Simmons, the mother of a young child, said Brimmer threw a helmet at her.
“She threw a helmet at my head, I was defending myself,” Simmons said. “I do feel bad, this is my first time in court.
“I’m apologising for fighting on Front Street, apologising to the people who own The Beach and apologising to my child. I was aware but I was intoxicated.”
Magistrate Juan Wolffe asked Simmons if it seemed appropriate for a mother to be fighting on the street.
“What is it about The Beach that has these fights?” he asked the court.
Mr Wolffe chastised Brimmer, a student at a college in the UK, for showing up to court wearing a strappy vest and not sleeves.
He also warned her that she had a lot to lose if she ended up with a criminal conviction.
“My education, my future job,” she replied. “I was drinking. I’m sorry for fighting, remorseful for my actions and I apologise to the people who work at The Beach. I’ve apologised to her [Simmons].”
Mr Wolffe gave both a conditional discharge for 12 months and warned them not to appear before the court again.
“Taking into consideration the age of Miss Brimmer and the fact she is studying overseas and that Miss Simmons is the mother of a young child, a conditional discharge is appropriate,” he said.
