Man with cannabis gave false information

A man caught with nearly an ounce of cannabis has admitted to simple possession in Magistrates’ Court, along with giving false information to police, plus three traffic offences.

Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a substance abuse report on Jaciano Furbert-Wade, 21, before his sentencing on December 10.

The court heard from Crown counsel Victoria Greening that police grew suspicious after they stopped Furbert-Wade on his bike along Spanish Point Road by Admiralty House Park, on the afternoon of July 8.

He gave his name as Robert Simons, with a 1993 birthdate, Ms Greening told the court, but a check with the Transport Control Department revealed that it was false.

Furbert-Wade then reached into his pocket and dropped something over the park wall. Officers found a plastic twist, later revealed to contain 27.65g of cannabis. The accused allegedly told them that he did not know what it was. When arrested, he said: “Can’t you give me a break? It’s not mine; it’s for the other guy that rode off.”

Police tried to search his residence under the Proceeds of Crime legislation, but the homeowner at the address said that he did not live there. Furbert-Wade had given a Smith’s address; the Crown maintained that he was of no fixed abode.

Furbert-Wade had pleaded guilty to giving a fake name, as well as driving while disqualified, with no insurance or licence, at an earlier court appearance.

Defence lawyer Dantae Williams said the accused, who wished to study abroad, has already paid $1,800 in fines and now hoped to attend drug court. Mr Warner ordered the report and set a return date for next month.
