Teen given conditional discharge

A teenager who admitted stealing a motorcycle and dangerous driving was given a conditional discharge and banned from the roads for 18 months when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

David Burchall, 19, of Town Hill Road, Smith’s, was spared a conviction on the condition that he stays away from alcohol and drugs, submits to random drug testing and completes 100 hours of community service over the next 12 months.

At a previous court appearance on December 11, Burchall pleaded guilty to stealing a motorcycle on June 26 last year and to driving the vehicle in a dangerous manner two days later.

The court heard that Burchall rode the uninsured and unlicensed motorcycle at speeds exceeding 83km/h before crashing into the side of a car that was turning into the Mid Atlantic Boat and Sports Club.

“You were like a train wreck,” magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said. “The only personal injury was yourself — and you are lucky.”

Mr Tokunbo gave Burchall a conditional discharge for 12 months for stealing the motorcycle and, for dangerous driving, banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

He also fined Burchall $400 for driving an uninsured and unlicensed motorcycle.
