Man jailed for damaging monitoring device

A man who ripped off a court-ordered electronic monitoring device has been jailed for four months.

Robert Green, 36, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to causing wilful damage to a Pro Tech Smart One monitoring device, worth about $3,500, belonging to the Bermuda Security Group.

The court heard that he had been ordered to wear the device as part of his bail conditions for an unrelated matter. However, on an unknown date between December 16 and January 13, he removed the tracking device.

He was arrested on January 13 and, when questioned about the device, told police: “It was ripped off about three weeks ago.”

The device has not been recovered. While prosecutors said the defendant was of no fixed abode, Green claimed that was not true.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told the court: “To rip of the device and dispose of it shows a total disregard for the bail that was granted and the intent of monitoring your movement and ensuring that you are tracked while on bail.”

Noting the offence carries a maximum penalty of one year behind bars, Mr Tokunbo sentenced Green to four months.
