Suspended sentence for drug importer
A 24-year-old man was given a suspended sentence in Magistrates’ Court this morning after he admitted bringing cannabis resin into Bermuda.
Andre Martin-Lewis, of Spicery Road, Warwick, had pleaded guilty at a previous court appearance to importing 739.4g of the drug — worth more than $70,000 — on July 12, 2013.
The court heard that Martin-Lewis was not able to perfect his $25,000 bail at the time and had been remanded into custody for nine months.
Mr Tokunbo sentenced Martin-Lewis to time already spent and gave him a suspended sentence of 12 months, to be followed by a further 12 months of probation.
He also ordered Martin-Lewis to participate in an anger management programme.
“I hope you learn from this experience,” Mr Tokunbo said. “You took a gamble and you lost.”
