A Westgate Correctional Facility employee accused of trying to smuggle contraband into the prison denied the charges when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Art Simons, 39, was charged with attempting to introduce a shower gel container and a deodorant container, which had scotch tape, cigarette papers and a twist of tobacco hidden inside, into the prison on January 11.

Mr Simons also denied possessing 5.66 grams of cannabis, worth $287, and 0.62 grams of cannabis resin, worth $50, both with intent to supply, in Sandys on the same date.

He was granted $5,000 bail and Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo set a trial date for June 5.

• Also in court today, a 63-year-old Warwick man denied conspiring to import cannabis and possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Charles Paul allegedly had 6,450 grams of cannabis, with a street value of $322,700, in St George’s on September 8 last year.

Mr Tokunbo granted $10,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that the defendant surrender his travel documents.

Mr Paul elected to be tried in Magistrates’ Court and a mention date was set for March 20.

• A Sandys man denied importing cannabis and possessing cannabis with intent to supply when he also appeared in court this morning.

The court heard that John Woods, 32, allegedly had 3,573 grams of cannabis in his possession, which would have had a street value of about $170,000, in St George’s on September 7 last year.

Mr Tokunbo granted $4,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that Mr Woods surrender his travel documents.

Mr Woods elected to be tried in Magistrates’ Court and a trial date was set for June 1.

• A 37-year-old Pembroke man denied possessing heroin with intent to supply and a second charge of supplying heroin.

Dennis Simmons allegedly had 21.86 grams of heroin, with a street value of $64,120, in his possession in Pembroke on September 20 last year.

Mr Tokunbo granted $20,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that Mr Simmons surrender his travel documents.

A trial date was set for June 24.

• A Pembroke woman denied knowingly permitting the misuse of a controlled drug on her property.

Theresa Richards, 42, also denied possessing a digital scale and a bong to be used in connection with a controlled drug.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Pembroke on September 25 last year.

Mr Tokunbo granted $3,000 bail and a trial date was set for May 28.

• Tyrone Burgess, 40, from St George’s, was fined $750 when he admitted possessing 0.07 grams of cocaine in Pembroke on June 26 last year.
