Suspended four-month sentence for bike thief
A Pembroke man who admitted taking a motorcycle without consent has been given a suspended prison sentence but will nevertheless spend the weekend in jail.
Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Travis Lowe, 22, faced three separate charges of taking conveyance of motorcycles without the owners’ consent and one count of dishonestly receiving a motorcycle, knowing or believing it to be stolen.
Lowe pleaded guilty to taking conveyance of a black Honda Scoopy without consent in Pembroke on August 2, 2013, but denied a second charge of taking a Honda Scoopy in Pembroke on October 16, 2013, and dishonestly receiving a black Honda Scoopy on a date unknown between October 16, 2013, and June 20 last year.
He pleaded not guilty to a third charge of taking a Yamaha Nouvo without consent on September 26 last year.
Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Lowe to four months in prison, suspended for 24 months, and fined him $800, with 30 days’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The magistrate set a trial date for May 13 to deal with the other two matters.
Lowe also maintained a not guilty plea regarding three outstanding traffic matters.
At his last appearance in court on February 20, Lowe pleaded not guilty to driving without insurance, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and the unauthorised use of a motorcycle on January 22.
Mr Warner adjourned the matters to Monday morning and remanded Lowe into custody.
