Bail terms stiffened for Israeli national

A foreign national accused of possessing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of criminal proceeds in his hotel safe has had his bail conditions amended.

At a previous appearance in Magistrates’ Court on March 16, Yeshayahu Zirkind, 25, was charged with knowingly possessing $826,000 in cash on March 12, which represented, wholly or partially, directly or indirectly, the proceeds of criminal conduct.

The Israeli, who travels on an American passport and normally resides in China, was not required to enter a plea because the charge is indictable and will be tried in Supreme Court.

He was granted $100,000 bail with a like surety, on the condition that he surrender his travel documents, not leave the jurisdiction without the permission of the courts, notify the Police of his residence and report to the nearest police station three times a week.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo today amended these conditions to remove the surety and ordered that the defendant reside at a Paget hotel, which he indicated to the courts would be his residence, wear an electronic monitoring device and report to Hamilton Police Station three times a week.

The matter was adjourned to March 30 for mention.
