A Sandys man has been remanded into custody after admitting breaking into two homes while wearing an electronic monitoring device.

Rayshun Edwards, 24, appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to trespassing at a property on Crown Lane, Warwick, and stealing electronics and a silver charm bracelet, valued at $3,486, on January 28. He also admitted trespassing at a residence on Middle Road, Southampton, and stealing electronics, clothing and food, of unknown value, on February 3.

The court heard that on both occasions, the electronic monitoring device that Edwards had been fitted with placed him on the properties at the time of the offences.

He also admitted stealing a motorcycle of unknown value in Pembroke on January 6. Magistrate Archibald Warner said the offences were particularly disturbing because Edwards had been placed on a curfew at the time and his behaviour was being monitored.

“It doesn’t take a brain scientist to work out that if you’ve got an electronic monitoring device, you are being monitored wherever you go,” he added.

Defence lawyer Kamal Worrell said that Edwards had substance abuse issues and had committed the offences to fund his habit.

Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry report and a drug assessment, and remanded Edwards into custody. The matter was adjourned to July 13 for sentencing.
