Devonshire man fined for police assault
A Devonshire man was fined heavily in Magistrates’ Court this morning for violently resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and using threatening words.
Malik Outerbridge, 42, had admitted the charges at a previous court appearance on April 14. He also pleaded guilty to possessing 0.19 grams of cocaine freebase, also known as crack cocaine.
All of the offences occurred in Devonshire on December 27 last year.
The court heard that police officers stopped Outerbridge on Middle Road after they observed him failing to stop at a stop sign on his motorcycle.
Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said that Outerbridge, who had an outstanding warrant to his name, became increasingly agitated and a struggle ensued with the officers when he refused to get in the car.
Mr Mahoney added that he then started verbally abusing the officers, threatening to kill one of them. Outerbridge was eventually subdued and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a brown paper twist containing crack cocaine was found in his jacket pocket.
Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Outerbridge $1,000 for violently resisting arrest, $1,500 for assaulting a police officer, $1,500 for using threatening words and $800 for possessing the controlled drug.
