Man, 22, banned from the roads for 18 months

A Southampton man has been banned from the roads for 18 months for driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Taahir Augustus, 22, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The Crown accepted his plea and offered no evidence on the alternative charge of driving while impaired.

The court heard that Augustus was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Parson’s Road in Pembroke on May 25.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith said that police officers could smell intoxicants when they approached Augustus to check that he was OK.

When asked if he had been drinking, he replied that he’d had “a few beers”.

He was searched and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where it was determined that he had 126mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed Augustus an $1,200 fine and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
