Man jailed for stealing Baygon

A 61-year-old resident of the Salvation Army shelter has been sent to prison for ten days for stealing a case of Baygon pesticide.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Steven Pitt pleaded guilty to stealing the items worth $47.52 from the MarketPlace supermarket on Church Street in Pembroke.

The court heard that an employee saw Pitt carrying the case out of a store room and leaving the store with it on May 10.

The employee alerted the manager, who located Pitt on Court Street and questioned him about the Baygon.

Prosecutor Loxly Ricketts said that although Pitt denied any knowledge of the incident, he agreed to go to Hamilton Police Station.

At the station, he admitted taking the case and said he had left it by the shopping carts.

Mr Ricketts, however, added that the items were not found and have not been recovered since.

“A case of Baygon? What — you’re fighting an insect war?” Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo asked Pitt, who did not reply.

When Mr Tokunbo, who took note of Pitt’s previous convictions for similar offences, asked Pitt what he should do with him, Pitt shrugged his shoulders.

“Take ten days at Westgate,” Mr Tokunbo said.

Also in court this morning, the case against a 27-year-old St George’s man was dismissed.

At a previous court appearance on March 5, Chae Foggo pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman in Warwick on August 9 last year.

But Mr Foggo was discharged when he appeared for trial this morning because the complainant was not present.

“There is no good reason for the complainant’s absence,” Magistrate Archibald Warner noted as he dismissed the matter.
