Chef charged in connection with hit-and-run
A head chef was charged in Magistrates’ Court this morning in connection with a collision that injured an Opposition senator.
Ryan Solien, 46, of Warwick, denied causing grievous bodily harm to Diallo Rabain by driving without due care and attention on Front Street in Pembroke.
Mr Solien, who is the head chef at Victoria Grill, also pleaded not guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
The charges stem from an alleged incident on January 2.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted $5,000 bail and set a trial date for August 14.
In a separate matter, 33-year-old Davita Gilbert was taken off the roads for a year after she admitted failing to provide a sample of breath for analysis.
The Crown accepted her plea and offered no evidence on the alternative charge of driving while impaired.
The court heard that police officers heard a “loud bang” coming from Frog Lane in Devonshire in the early hours of April 18.
They found a black Kia motor car blocking the southbound lane — the vehicle had apparently collided with a pole in the centre lane divider.
The officers arrested Gilbert and took her to Hamilton Police Station, where she refused to provide a sample of breath.
Ms Gilbert apologised in court and said that it would not happen again.
Mr Tokunbo handed her an $800 fine and disqualified her from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
