Student sentenced over drugs charges

A Devonshire teenager who admitted possessing drugs and drug equipment at a school was given an 18-month conditional discharge in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

At a previous court appearance, Cavin Francis, 18, had pleaded guilty to possessing 8.66 grams of cannabis with intent to supply at CedarBridge Academy, an increased penalty zone, on December 10 last year. He also admitted possessing digital scales and plastic bags.

The court heard today that Francis had bought the drugs before school, that he claimed they were for his personal use and that he said he had the scales to make sure he received the amount he had paid for.

Francis, who did not graduate with the rest of his class because he was expelled, also said he regretted the offence in the pre-sentencing social inquiry report.

Francis’ father also addressed magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, asking for leniency in light of his son having “learnt his lesson”. He added that “this will never happen again”.

Mr Tokunbo took into account Francis’ early guilty plea, that he has no previous convictions and that he made a mistake.

He handed Francis an 18-month conditional discharge on the condition that he abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs, and abide by the recommendations in the pre-sentencing reports.
