Men banned from roads for driving offences

A St George’s man has been taken off the roads for two years after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to a woman while driving.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Alexander Christopher admitted injuring the woman by driving without due care and attention, or reasonable consideration for others, in St George’s on March 20. The 45-year-old also pleaded guilty to not holding a valid driver’s licence at the time of the offence.

The court heard that Christopher, who is in custody for another matter, was involved in a two-vehicle collision after he turned onto Khyber Pass — a one-way street — from the St George’s golf course and crashed into an oncoming car. Both vehicles were damaged and the complainant required hospital treatment.

Christopher told the court today that it was an accident and that he did not realise Khyber Pass was a one-way street because there was no sign.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo disqualified Christopher from driving all vehicles for two years and ordered a social inquiry report. Sentencing was adjourned to November 24.

In a separate matter, 45-year-old Mohammed Siddiqi was handed an $800 fine and 10 demerit points on his licence for driving without due care and attention.

The Pembroke resident admitted the offence, which took place on Middle Road in Devonshire on May 8.

Prosecutor Alan Richards said Siddiqi turned right into the path of a motorcycle as he was exiting the parking lot of the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

The victim suffered abrasions to his right side, hip, knee and both wrists. His motorcycle and the defendant’s car were both damaged.
