Man, 21, fined for possessing cannabis

A 21-year-old Southampton man has been handed a $300 fine for possessing cannabis.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Tahva Virgil pleaded guilty to having 2.73 grams of the drug in Pembroke on December 12 last year.

The court heard that police were on duty at the junction of Front Street and Burnaby Street when they noticed a motorcycle travelling east at high speed.

The rider failed to stop at a red light and was stopped.

As the officers were speaking to Virgil they noticed a strong smell of cannabis and two plastic twists were found in his jacket pocket.

Virgil told the officers that he had “just bought it” and that “only one is mine”.

He then pushed the officer and tried to escape but was detained.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed him a $300 fine.
