Drunk driver fined and banned from the roads
A 46-year-old Paget man has been fined and banned from the roads for driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Nuno Luz pleaded guilty to the offence that happened in Paget on Saturday.
He also admitted not having a valid driver’s licence.
The court heard that police officers saw Luz heading west in the eastbound lane on South Road, near the junction with Point Finger Road, at about 1.40am.
They followed Luz, who was riding a motorcycle, and observed him swerving from side to side and abruptly increasing and decreasing his speed.
He was stopped on Middle Road and the officers noted that his eyes were red and glossy, his speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol.
When asked if he had been drinking, he replied: “A little.”
At Hamilton Police Station it was determined that he had 222 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.
When the officers charged him with the offences, they discovered that he was not the holder of a valid driver’s licence.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed Luz a $1,200 fine for driving while over the blood-alcohol limit and banned him from the roads for 18 months.
Mr Tokunbo also fined him $150 for driving without a licence.
