Killer’s sentence extended after drug find
A man in prison for the murder of two men has had his sentence extended after cannabis was found in his cell.
Le-Veck Roberts, who is serving life sentences for the fatal shooting of both Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to possessing cannabis in Westgate Correctional Facility.
As part of his murder sentence, the courts had ordered that Roberts serve at least 25 years of his life sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The court heard that on the morning of July 22 last year, prison officers conducted a search of Roberts’s cell with a K9 unit.
During the search, the officers discovered a small quantity of plant material, later confirmed to be 0.78 grams of cannabis, stashed in his mattress.
While he denied the drugs belonged to him when speaking to police and denied the drugs offence in an initial court appearance, he reversed his plea during an appearance before the court today.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo noted both Roberts’s sentence and a past drugs conviction, sentencing him to 60 days in prison.
He ordered that the term run consecutively with the 25-year tariff in place for his murder convictions.
