Burglar remanded to Drug Treatment Court

A self-confessed heroin addict who burgled his co-worker’s home has been remanded in custody to Drug Treatment Court.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Martin Morris admitted entering a home on Spring Hill in Warwick on Thursday morning as a trespasser with intent to steal.

The court heard that a witness saw the 43-year-old Paget resident tampering with the window of a lower apartment.

When she approached the defendant, who had gained entry, and asked him what he was doing, he replied that he was looking for his keys.

The witness told Morris she would call the police and Morris made good his escape.

He was later arrested on the Railway Trail and admitted the offence during a police interview, saying he committed the crime to pay for drugs.

In court, Morris apologised to his co-worker. He said he was a heroin addict, adding “drugs just destroyed my life”.

Morris asked magistrate Juan Wolffe to consider allowing him to participate in Drug Treatment Court again, explaining that he had previously been terminated because of frequent relapses.

Mr Wolffe agreed to initiate the process, telling Morris: “This is your time to put aside your past transgressions and get on with your life.”

He ordered a social inquiry report and a drug assessment and remanded Morris in custody until tomorrow’s Drug Treatment Court session.
