Men deny murder in court hearing

A pair of men separately accused of murder denied the offences in Supreme Court this morning.

Shantoine Prinston Burrows, 24, pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering 26-year-old Rickai Swan, wounding Damiko Gibbons and using a firearm to commit both offences.

The charges relate to a fatal shooting outside Southampton Rangers Sports Club on October 23 last year.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Leverock, 25, denied murdering Royal Bermuda Regiment sergeant Dejion Stange-Simmons in an incident on November 26 last year.

Both men were remanded into custody until April 8 and 15, respectively, when their cases will be mentioned.

Also appearing during the session were Chavdar Bachev and Georgi Todorov, who stand accused of multiple counts of theft, attempted theft and money laundering.

While the men were scheduled to appear to enter their pleas, the court heard from defence lawyer Richard Horseman that a Bulgarian translator would be needed.

Mr Horseman said he had been able to communicate through a Spanish translator with Mr Bachev, whom he represents, but such communication with Mr Todorov was not possible.

Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons adjourned the matter for two weeks.

Also during the session was a 57-year-old Devonshire man, who denied charges of sexually exploiting a young girl, intruding on the privacy of the same girl and inducing her to commit an indecent act.

All of the offences were said to have occurred on October 5 last year.

Neither the defendant nor the complainant can be identified for legal reasons.

The defendant was released on bail until June 14, when he is expected to return to the Supreme Court for trial.
