Woman banned for causing crash

A Paget woman tearfully apologised in Magistrates’ Court for causing an accident that injured a motorcyclist.

Lillian Sumagaysay Golajer, 39, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to Wilford Gibbons by driving without due care and attention on January 9.

The court heard that at around 4.35pm that day, Golajer was driving south along Tee Street when she heard a noise beneath her car.

As she was looking down, the car moved into the northbound lane, where Mr Gibbons was riding a motorcycle. Meanwhile, Golajer’s car continued to veer off the road and overturned.

Speaking to police after the incident, Golajer admitted looking away from the road, saying she didn’t realise she had struck another vehicle until she had climbed out of her overturned car.

Mr Gibbons suffered multiple injuries in the crash, including broken legs, a dislocated shoulder and cuts to the head.

Defence lawyer Richard Horseman said Golajer was extremely remorseful for what happened, and had visited Mr Gibbons to apologise for her actions.

Addressing the court herself, Golajer began to cry, saying: “I went to his house and said sorry to him and I prayed that he would recover. I’m very sorry.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Golajer $1,200 for the offence and imposed a mandatory two year disqualification for driving all vehicles.
