Teenager admits burglary, taking cycle
A Warwick teen was remanded into custody after he admitted a pair of burglaries.
Meshach Crichton, 17, pleaded not guilty to stealing a laptop from one home, more than $11,000 of valuables from another and taking a motorcycle without consent in three separate incidents.
The court heard that on December 30 last year, a South Road, Warwick resident discovered that his grey Honda Scoopy was missing and reported it stolen. Later that same day, police received a report that Crichton was seen riding the vehicle in Warwick.
Officers attended his place of work and found the vehicle parked on a nearby grass verge. They then saw Crichton leaving his workplace holding a silver helmet.
Questioned about the bike, he admitted that he rode it to work that day, but said he had found it that morning.
The second incident occurred on January 18, when a West Crescent, Warwick resident left her home at 11am. When she returned some time later, she discovered it had been ransacked and contacted police.
Upon looking through the home, she reported that a MacBook Pro, valued at $1,632 had been taken.
Officers later found the computer, identifiable by its serial number, at Crichton’s home beneath his mattress, however it was no longer in working order.
He told police that he had found the computer at around 10am on January 18, at which time he said it was soaking wet having been left out in the rain. Crichton said he put it under his mattress in an effort to dry it out, saying that he intended to return it if he discovered who owned it and keep it if not.
The third incident took place on April 13, when Crichton broke into a Lusher Hill, Warwick home. While the residents were not at home at the time of the robbery, a tenant in an attached apartment reported hearing a voice repeatedly shouting “good morning”.
The tenant dismissed the noise, assuming that someone had come by to do work at the home, but became concerned after hearing a series of loud crashes.
When she went to investigate, she saw a young man in the home, kneeling by the television. When the suspect saw her, he pulled a stocking over his head.
She later saw the suspect fleeing the area with a black and red back pack. Another witness told police that they had seen the defendant a short time after the burglary throwing an object into some bushes.
Crichton was arrested at his home later that day, wearing a shirt matching the description of that worn by the burglar, but he maintained that he had been at home the entire time.
Police later searched the bushes near where the witness saw Crichton throwing an object and found a black and red backpack filled with items from the burgled home, valued at $11,132.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered that Crichton be remanded into custody until the completion of a Social Inquiry Report, adjourning his sentencing until June 7.
