Truck driver admits causing crash
A truck driver was banned from the road after he admitted injuring another driver in a crash.
Hewitt Caines, 62, pleaded guilty to a single count of causing grievous bodily harm to Hugo Benziger by driving without due care and attention.
The court heard that on the afternoon of March 4, Mr Benziger was travelling west along Middle Road in Devonshire when Caines pulled out of Tee Street in a truck, striking the motorcyclist in the process.
Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that the accident caused Mr Benziger a broken nose, adding that the incident was caught on CCTV camera.
While Mr Mahoney said Caines pulled out into Middle Road without stopping, the defendant said that was not the case.
“I believed I stopped. I just didn’t see the guy coming,” he said. “There’s a corner there and he just got lost in the corner.”
While Caines asked the court to be spared a road ban, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said that the penalty for the offence included a mandatory disqualification.
He banned Caines from driving for a period of two years, further fining him $1,500 for the offence.
