‘Celebrating’ drunk driver gets 18-month ban

A Southampton motorist has been banned from the road after crashing his cycle following a drunken celebration.

This morning Kenneth Williams, 43, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol following the May 23 crash.

Magistrates’ Court heard that police officers attended a two-vehicle collision at 10.30pm on Harrington Sound Road.

At the scene, they spotted a parked car with scratches and a badly damaged black Liberty cycle lying in the road.

Williams, who had minor cuts and a swollen cheek, identified himself to officers as the cycle driver — and they noted that his eyes were bloodshot and that he smelled of liquor.

When asked if he had been drinking, the self-employed contractor replied: “Yes, I was celebrating. I just found work to do.”

Williams was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he agreed to a breath test and was found to have 216 mg of alcohol in his blood — more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

The defendant told the court that he had been unemployed for six months before finding work, which had sparked the evening of joyful drinking.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe disqualified Williams from driving all vehicles for 18 months, and ordered him to pay a $1,200 fine by July 8 or face three months in prison.
