Pembroke man sentenced to prison for assault

A 29-year-old Pembroke man has been sentenced to 30 days in prison for assaulting a taxi driver.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Treadwell Smith admitting injuring the man during the incident in Pembroke on May 14.

The court heard that Smith approached the taxi driver at about 3am and asked to use his mobile phone. The taxi driver refused, as did another driver Smith then approached.

Smith left the area and returned with another man. They attacked the complainant, leaving him with a bloody nose.

Police arrived and arrested the defendant, however, the other man had fled the scene.

In court today, Smith apologised for his behaviour, adding that he was intoxicated at the time.

“At that time there was a lot going on,” he said. “I had a lot on my mind.”

However, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “Not only was it thug life behaviour but it was unprovoked.

“That kind of behaviour has to be discouraged and frowned upon.”

Noting Smith’s previous conviction for robbery, he sentenced him to 30 days’ imprisonment.
