Woman receives road ban for impaired driving

A Devonshire woman was banned from the road for more than a year after she admitted driving while impaired.

Monique Shannon, 39, pleaded guilty to the offence during an appearance in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The court heard that at around 1.55am yesterday, officers were travelling along Parsons Road when they came across Shannon, who flagged them down.

She told the officers that she had struck the back of a car and was willing to pay for the damages. While speaking, the officers noticed that her breath smelled like alcohol.

Asked if she had been drinking, she admitted that she had a few beers and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

Shannon provided police with samples of her breath, which showed a lower reading of 251mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — more than triple the legal limit of 80mg.

After she pled guilty, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Shannon $1,200, banning her from driving all vehicles for a period of 18 months.
