A 28-year-old security guard has been fined $3,800 for assaulting police, intending to breach the peace and resisting arrest.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Lakeva Camara, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers and causing bodily harm in Pembroke on Saturday.

She also admitted assaulting another police officer, using behaviour in a public place, namely Front Street, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and violently resisting arrest.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that police officers attended a reported fight at the entrance of the number one car park in Hamilton at about 3.20am.

The defendant was being restrained by another woman when the officers intervened and attempted to calm Camara, who was very intoxicated.

She, however, became increasingly aggressive, shouting profanities at the officers. She continued to struggle and at one point fell to the ground, pinning one of the officers beneath her.

As she was being arrested, she spat at the officers, kicked one in the chest and later bit another in the bicep, leaving both in need of medical attention.

According to Mr Mahoney, Camara, who works as a security guard, continued her belligerent behaviour when taken to Hamilton Police Station, where she was immediately placed in a cell.

In court today, she said: “I do not remember anything. All I remember is waking up in a cell. I don’t remember being in the club. I don’t remember anything.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo replied: “It’s a pity you don’t remember anything. Obviously, you were drunk out of your mind.” He also noted her history of assaulting police officers and resisting arrest, adding “and you repeated it”. “This is pretty bad.”

Mr Tokunbo fined Camara $1,000 for each of the three assault charges, $500 for using behaviour with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace and $300 for resisting arrest.
