A Pembroke man has been remanded into custody after he admitted stealing a mobile phone and $205 cash.

Jason Liburd, 45, was at The Queen’s Club in Hamilton in the early hours of Sunday, October 2 when he spotted an unattended Louis Vuitton handbag belonging to Marguerite Furbert, who was socialising.

At 12.30am, Liburd took the $890 bag into the men’s bathroom, where he disposed of it in a toilet tank after pocketing Ms Furbert’s silver Samsung phone and the cash.

CCTV footage showed the defendant committing the crime, and he was arrested.

Thursday morning, Magistrates’ Court heard that Liburd had a string of convictions dating back to 1981, when he was a juvenile.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo returned the defendant to prison, awaiting a Social Inquiry Report, a Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre drug report and a psychiatric report.

He will return to court for mention on December 1.
